ROAD SAFETY OF THE OCAL

The Road Safety component of OCAL finds its essence in a rather worrying context. Every year the road kills at least 1.2 million people

with around 140,000 injured a day, 15,000 of whom will be disabled for life according to the WHO. Road traffic crashes claim as many victims as major pandemics such as HIV / AIDS, malaria or tuberculosis. They are now the leading cause of death in the 15-29 age group and the second leading cause of death in the 30-44 age group.

In Africa, the consequences of road insecurity are a real brake on economic growth and development. Although Africa’s vehicle fleet is only 2% of the world’s total, more than 300,000 people die on African roads every year.
